Taking the trains across America with the USA Rail Pass is an excellent way to see the United States from a different viewpoint. The pass allows you to visit over 500 destinations in the Amtrak system and to choose how long you want to travel.
The USA Rail Pass is not intended for use as a commuting pass.
Regions and Validity
Passes are available in three travel durations and travel segments throughout the entire United States:
15 days/8 segments
30 days/12 segments
45 days/18 segments
Travel must begin within 180 days of the date the pass is issued. All travel must be completed within 180 days of reserving the first travel segment or within the selected travel duration of the pass once the first travel segment is reserved, whichever comes first.
Do I Need Tickets and Reservations? Yes. Your USA Rail Pass is not a ticket. When traveling on a USA Rail Pass, you must have a ticket and a reservation for each train you board. You must make reservations and pick up your ticket(s) before boarding any train.
Are There Any Other Travel Restrictions? The USA Rail Pass is valid for travel on all Amtrak trains except:
Thruway bus connections (7000-7999 series)
The Canadian portion of trains operated jointly by Amtrak and VIA Rail Canada.
Travel is restricted to four one-way trips between two cities, and to all cities in between, over the same route.
