South Sudan, officially the Republic of South Sudan, is a country in East Africa. Its capital and largest city is Juba, located in the southern state of Central Equatoria. The landlocked country is bordered by Ethiopia to the east; Kenya to the southeast; Uganda to the south; the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the southwest; and the Central African Republic to the west; and the Republic of Sudan to the north. South Sudan includes the vast swamp region of the Sudd formed by the White Nile, locally called the Bahr al Jabal.

Drinking Water: All water should be regarded as a potential health risk. Milk is unpasteurised.
Health: Comprehensive health insurance is recommended and it should include emergency air evacuation coverage.
Local Offences / Laws: There are many restrictions on photography and decisions are often made on the spot. Before taking photographs, check for local authorities in the area and enquire.
Travel Tips / Warnings: There are currently no ATM facilities in South Sudan. It is better to bring cash in USD. Areas of South Sudan may be under conflict.

Visa Requirements

Visas are required by South African passport holders.

NOTE: Some nationalities may be able to apply online: www.evisa.gov.ss. This currently does not include South Africa. 

REQUIREMENTS:Applications to the embassy may be sent via courier, or in person. 

  • 1 Completed visa application form (5A) - legible and in capital letters. Double-sided copies will not be accepted. 
  • 2 Recent passport photos (colour and original and clear)
  • Passport (valid for a minimum of 6 months) with 1 blank page in the passport, plus photocopy. 
  • Proof of payment of visa fee
  • Copy of Yellow Fever certificate/vaccination
  • Proof of sufficient financial resources: bank statements, or sponsor / guarantor in Sudan
  • Return air ticket
  • Letter from employer
  • For business visa: letter of invitation, proof of business appointments
